Groundhog Day is celebrated every year on February 2nd. According to legend, if the groundhog comes out of his burrow and it is cloudy and he does not see his shadow, then spring weather will arrive early, but if it is sunny on that day, and he does see his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather.

History of Groundhog Day in the United States

Groundhog day was officially adopted in the United States in 1887, and nowhere is the celebration larger than in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where thousands gather each year on Groundhog Day to watch their official groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, predict the weather. Apparently, at the time that Groundhog day was adopted, a man named Clymer H Freas was the editor of the Punxsutawney Sprit, the local newspaper, and he proclaimed the town's groundhog to be the official Groundhog Day meterologist. Apparently, he made a big impression, because Punxsutawney is the center of Groundhog celebrations and activity every February 2nd.

Groundhog Stuffed Animals and Puppets

One fun way to celebrate is with a groundhog stuffed animal or puppet. There are several plush groundhog stuffed animals on the market that make great Groundhog Day toys. My favorites are probably the ones from Douglas Toy Company, which makes some quality stuffed animals, but there is also a specific Ty Beanie Baby called Punxsutawny Phil from 2004 that is holiday specific, and his Beanie Baby birthday is February 2nd, of course. The Folkmanis groundhog hand puppet is especially fun for kids to act out the groundhog looking for his shadow!

Groundhog Day Children Books

One fun way to celebrate this day with children is through Groundhog Day children's books, and there are three that come to mind. The first is a fun and educational book for pre-school through 3rd grade called "Groundhog Weather School," which is a delightful book that incorporates facts about weather, geography and groundhogs in a story about Professor Ground's weather school.

Everyone likes to be appreciated, and "Groundhog's Day Off," which both and adults will like, is a story about a groundhog who perhaps feels a little less an appreciation for what he does, so he decides to go on a vacation as the townspeople try to woo him back.

The third book is simply titled "Groundhog Day!" and is most suitable for children from kindergarten through 4th grade. It contains info about groundhogs and, more specifically, the beliefs and traditions that have lead up to the modern day celebration.
